Well last night I went to graduation. And let's just say, things didn't turn out like they usually do at graduation.
I got home from running a few errands with my mom and I had a few minutes to spare to get changed and make myself look a little more presentable and a little less like a melting snow cone cause it was freakin'
hot yesterday, It felt like it was about 100 degrees outside. blugh =\ Don't get me wrong, I love the warm weather but that's a little much.
I caught a ride with my friends Kali and Kayla, and we were driving out to the community college where our high school has their graduation ceremonies every year (our auditorium is too small *rolls eyes*). Just before I left, my mom informed me that this area was in the severe thunderstorm alert and that the weather was supposed to get pretty bad. I was like, "Oh, okay, well it probably won't start until after we get there." That was wishful thinking.
We were driving, and it was raining a little when Kali and Kayla picked me up, but then all of a sudden it started
pouring, I mean, to the point where poor Kali--who was driving-- couldn't even see. Now, I live in a very rural area. I'm talkin' corn fields and rolling hills as far as the eye can see (yeah that's right, I'm a small town girl *rolls eyes*). So we turned down this one road, and I suddenly realize we were driving through the exact same place where about 8 years ago a horrible Tornado came through and destroyed everything in it's path. O_O
So at that point I was sitting in the back seat,
freaking out and sending up silent prayers because I didn't wanna get swept up but a tornado. lol. We drove through the fieldy, hilly area and finally got into town again. But we found that there was a
line on the main street to get into the college, just to
park. *facepalm*
So we're sitting there, waiting in line, and it suddenly started
hailing. I'm not talkin' little specs of ice, I'm talkin' huge pieces of ice that range anywhere from grape to golf ball sized pieces of ice that are falling from the sky, practically denting Kali's roof to her car. I was just waiting for one of them to crack her windshield. Meanwhile, it was pouring, haling, thundering like God decided to have a bowling tournament upstairs, and lightning like you would not believe. The streak lightning that you can actually see touch down-- I swear I saw a streak of lightning touch down next to us. O_O
Now I don't usually scare easily, especially with thunderstorm. I'm usually rather level-headed. But being stuck outside, during the middle of a terrible thunderstorm, with nothing but a puny car to protect us, it's safe to say I was freaking out.
After about 10 minutes of sitting in a line, Kali just decided to park on the road and we ran two blocks to the college. We got inside and we found out that the power went out in the building where they hold graduation. That meant no sound system, no lights, and
no air conditioning.
The ceremony is always held in the gigantic gym of the college, so we go in, find some of our other friends and sit with them. We got inside the gym, and we realized that because of the lack of air circulation and the massive amount of people on the bleachers, that it had to be over 100 degrees in that gym. It was insanely hot.
Well after some time, the Superintendent of my school came out, and ordered everyone to be quiet so he could shout cause he had no sound system or anything. He said that he wanted to get people home as quickly as possible, so instead of having a regular ceremony, that was complete with speeches by the Valedictorian, and the President of the Senior class, and a few other faculty members. They were just going to announce the students' names and they'd walk up to get their diploma. :(
I felt so bad because that is
not a graduation ceremony. I personally believe that they should've postponed the ceremony for another day because the kids' graduation was ruined because of a storm.
So the class president came up on stage and shouted out the names while the Vice Principal handed them their diploma. During the "ceremony" though, two people passed out cause of the heat and had to be carried away on stretchers and taken to the hospital. Eventually they found a megaphone and gave it to the Class President and she announced the names through that.
Graduation was over in less than a half hour, when it usually lasts for about 2 and a half hours.
I felt so bad for my friends that graduated. My friend Colin was upset and I gave him a big hug, but I knew it wouldn't really make up for anything. But it started to rain again and we had to get home quick before the storm picked up again so we said some quick goodbyes and left.
One thing is for sure, this'll be a graduation to remember. But not in a good way. :(
